A critical week for the climate emergency

This is a critical week for the future of the planet. President Biden is set to announce new US carbon emission reduction goals, and if they’re ambitious enough, it will be a huge boost to the campaign for other high-emission countries to increase their goals. If they’re not, it would be a crushing setback. Time is of the essence, as we have only nine years to reduce emissions by 50%, if we want to hold global warming to 1.5ºC and avoid catastrophic consequences.

His announcement will come during or just before a virtual meeting on the climate emergency that Biden is sponsoring. The leaders of 40 countries will participate.
