A Districtwide Milestone in Environmental Equity Education

On June 6, faculty from across the Los Angeles Community College District came together to mark a districtwide milestone in environmental equity education. The Environmental Equity Education Demonstration Project Faculty Culmination and Curriculum Presentation highlighted the collective work of educators embedding environmental equity into curriculum across disciplines—demonstrating both the scale of the effort and its growing impact.

The Sustainable Environment Institute (SEI-LACCD) continues to build on the success of the District’s Environmental Equity Education Demonstration Project, a faculty-led initiative that demonstrates the power of collaboration to advance environmental equity in higher education.

Led by SEI during the 2024–25 academic year, with support from the Climate Center at West Los Angeles College, the project engaged all nine LACCD colleges. In total, 53 faculty members representing more than 30 disciplines participated, developing curriculum that integrates environmental equity directly into course design and teaching practice.

The scale of the project reflects its growing impact. Curriculum developed through the Demonstration Project is expected to reach more than 7,000 LACCD students in the 2025–26 academic year—underscoring how faculty professional development and interdisciplinary collaboration can drive meaningful, districtwide change.

A key milestone was the Faculty Culmination and Curriculum Presentation, which drew significant statewide and regional attention. The event was attended by LaTonya Parker, Robert Stewart, and LACCD Board of Trustees member Nichelle Henderson, along with representatives from government agencies and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Their presence underscored the project’s relevance beyond LACCD and its alignment with broader efforts to advance equity-centered curriculum across California’s community colleges.

The project’s inclusion in the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges monthly report further signals its statewide significance, positioning LACCD as a leader in integrating environmental equity into community college education.

Together, these accomplishments reflect SEI’s ongoing commitment to building durable, scalable models for environmental equity education—strengthening faculty leadership and expanding impact across disciplines, campuses, and students throughout the District.
